What edema is
Edema is swelling caused by fluid building up in the tissue, most often in the lower legs, ankles, and feet. It has many possible causes - long days on your feet, travel, pregnancy, vein problems, and some medications and medical conditions. A doctor should sort out what is behind new or worsening swelling, especially if it is one-sided or comes with pain.
How compression socks are used
Graduated compression socks apply gentle pressure that is firmest at the ankle and eases up the leg. Many people with swelling are advised to wear them during the day. If your doctor prescribed compression, tell us what the prescription calls for and we will match the garment to it.
Choosing a pair
Fit matters more than anything. Measure your calf and ankle in the morning, before swelling builds, and follow the size chart - a sock that is too tight or too loose does neither comfort nor support. Compression level is measured in mmHg. Higher levels are a conversation to have with your doctor first.
When to talk to a doctor first
New, sudden, or one-sided swelling, swelling with pain, warmth, or redness, and swelling with shortness of breath all need medical attention first. Compression garments are not a substitute for finding the cause.
